DÜSSELDORF, 1st June 2016 - Hunkeler (Hall 8a, Stand C20) and Canon Europe (Hall 8a, Stand B50), are demonstrating the reality of flexible, short-run digital production of ‘Day A’ newspapers, through a collaborative project at drupa 2016.
Together, the two companies are producing same-day editions of five national newspapers - Süddeutsche Zeitung (Germany), Hürriyet (Turkey), The Daily Telegraph (UK), The Sunday Times (UK) and De Telegraaf (Netherlands).
Canon customer DATEN PARTNER GmbH, located in Erkrath near Düsseldorf, is producing the newspaper pages between 01.00am and 03.00am each day, using data files supplied overnight by the publishers. Availability and data preparation for printing was enabled and supported by IPS Pressevertrieb GmbH, Meckenheim and Newsprint Italia, Srl, Milan.
The newspaper pages are sorted and batched in Canon’s PRISMA Production Workflow for high-speed printing on DATEN PARTNER GmbH’s Océ ColorStream 3700 continuous inkjet press. This takes advantage of the inkjet press’s capacity to print variable page lengths for automated inline changeover between broadsheet and tabloid formats. The Océ ColorSteam 3700 is capable of printing on lightweight substrates, hence its suitability for digital newspaper production. The Canon/ Hunkeler drupa project uses Holmen 72, 52gsm.
DATEN PARTNER is a specialist document producer, with the capacity to print over five million document pages and insert 2.4 million envelopes a day at its state-of-the-art production site in Erkrath.
The printed reels are delivered by DATEN PARTNER to the Hunkeler stand in Hall 8a at Messe Düsseldorf for live collation and finishing on the Hunkeler Dynamic POPP 7 Newspaper Solution, at speeds of 150 metres per minute. Today’s newspapers are then available to customers visiting the Hunkeler and Canon stands at drupa from 10.00am. This solution, capable of switching between broadsheet and tabloid newspaper formats on the fly, offers customers utmost flexibility and productivity for producing a wide variety of different titles and formats with only minimal manual intervention.
Canon Europe Senior Director, Peter Wolff comments: “This ‘Day A’ digital newspaper printing collaboration between Canon, our customer DATEN PARTNER and Hunkeler is a perfect illustration of Canon’s commitment to supporting customers by developing intelligent, integrated solutions that bring together Canon’s advanced digital output technology and workflow competence with specialist finishing solutions from expert partners. This project shows how innovations in digital production can help news publishers develop fast, responsive, data-led business models that meet the evolving needs of their readers for better, more individually targeted content.”
